This is Marvelous Margate!

History & Geography

Now celebrating our 100th Anniversary, Margate City was originally incorporated as the borough of South Atlantic City by an Act of the New Jersey Legislature on September 7, 1885, from portions of Egg Harbor Township. Then reincorporated with the name Margate City April 20, 1909.

The city stretches approximately eight blocks from the Atlantic Ocean to the bay at most points in town and is roughly 2 miles long.

Margate’s full-time population was estimated in 2007 at just over 8500 with just under 4000 households and roughly 2300 families.

Government & Education

Margate City operates under a commission form of municipal government with 3 elected officials seated in an at-large non-partisan election. The commissioners then vote for the position of mayor between themselves and assigned the office by resolution. These officials serve a four -year concurrent term.

Current officials are:

Michael Becker - Mayor and Commissioner of Revenue and Finance
Maury Blumberg - Commissioner of Public Affairs and Public Safety
Daniel Campbell - Commissioner of Public Works, Parks, and Public Property.

For kindergarten through eighth grade, students attend Margate Public Schools. High schools grade students attend Atlantic City High School. There are also a number of private institutions available.

Summer Destination & Recreation

Along with other spots on the Jersey Shore, Margate becomes a popular destination in the summer months. Many houses in Margate are second homes used during the summer, and a considerable number are owned by year-round residents. Unlike in other places, such as Cape May or Ocean City, where many visitors spend a few nights in a hotel, Margate has no hotel, so most of the people who choose this town are regulars.

Most real estate offices in town can assist vacationers going 'down the shore' in finding a weekly, monthly or summer rental. Winter rentals are also available.

Margate beaches attract surfers, kayaking and hobie cat sailing. Several beaches provide rest rooms for beachgoers. Margate City Beach Patrol operates lifeguard stands and beach patrol operations for the Margate beaches. Lifeguards are on duty during summer months from 10 am to 6 pm, with more limited hours in the late spring and early autumn months. Beach tags are required during season except during the Thrilling Thursday Family program where the beaches are free every Thursday.

Margate is host to many bayside docks providing the casual fisherman hours of enjoyment and relaxation. Local charter boats offer sport and deep sea fishing. Margate’s many marinas offer docks for lease, equipment rentals, fuel stations and fishing charters.

Associations & Groups

The Margate Business Association and a number of local community groups sponsor an active schedule of special family events, for all ages, throughout the year.

Business Districts

There are two active business districts in Margate offering a wide variety of options for shopping. The restaurant community offers everything from world-class cuisine to the best after-beach and bar food on the Jersey Shore. Many restaurants convert after dinner hour to entertainment and dancing, giving Margate City a great reputation for a wide variety of lively nightlife.
